Nestle (Malaysia) Bhd said it will strive to achieve 100% paper straws across its entire ultra-high temperature (UHT) processing range by the end of 2020. The move will affect the following products:
- MILO UHT 200ml
- MILO UHT 125ml
- MILO Nutri Pluz 200ml
- Nestle Just Milk Full Cream UHT 200ml
- Nestle Just Milk Strawberry UHT 200ml
- Nestle Omega Plus UHT 200ml
- Nestle Omega Plus Dark Choc UHT 200ml
The eco-friendly initiative will eliminate more than 200 million plastic straws per year, a figure that is also indicative of the company’s UHT sales volume. This war on plastic waste will make Nestle (Malaysia) the first major food and beverage company in Southeast Asia to eliminate the use of plastic straws from their UHT range.
Nestle started the initiative with the MILO UHT 125ml drink packs and Milo Nutri Pluz with the MILO UHT 125ml drink going paper straw in the fourth quarter of 2019.
The move towards the elimination of plastic straws in packet drinks is already a goal outlined in the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change’s (MESTECC) Malaysia Roadmap Towards Zero Single Use Plastics (2018-2030).
The guideline mentions by 2022, SKU ECO001 straw (bio straw) will be introduced including straws for packet drinks.
