Pet-Friendly Spaces Are Expanding into the Heartlands: Pasir Ris Mall is One Destination That Wants to Welcome More Furry Friends

With the introduction of the cat licensing scheme introduced last month, it is evident that there is a growing shift in Singapore’s approach towards animal welfare.

Previously, pet-friendly areas have been limited to specific districts in Singapore, such as the Holland Village, River Valley, or Katong precincts. But more pet-friendly spaces are making their way into the heartlands: Beyond just parks, more common spaces — like in shopping malls — are opening up to pets.

Pasir Ris Mall is one of them. The mall, which opened in June this year, boasts a scenic al fresco dining area adjacent to the Central Greenway — a pet-friendly walkway and cycling path that directly connects the mall with Pasir Ris Park and Beach — on its second floor. Several restaurants along the Central Greenway welcome diners and their furry friends, such as Piz’za Amore and Korean restaurant Nayana Plus.

The inclusion of these pet-friendly spaces at Pasir Ris Mall, which is located in the heart of the neighbourhood, reflects a broader integration of pets into daily life in Singapore.

This shift suggests a growing acceptance of pets as integral members of Singaporean households — together with developments such as the recent cat licensing scheme, these developments may indicate a rising demand for more pet-friendly infrastructure across the island.

We believe this evolving trend presents a compelling story angle, showcasing how businesses, communities, and policies are coming together for a more pet-friendly nation. We would be delighted to arrange for interviews with spokespeople from Pasir Ris Mall or its pet-friendly tenants, Nayana Plus or Piz’za Amore, who would love to share more about why they designed their heartland concepts to be welcoming to pets as well.
