Did you know hydrated skin is more receptive to absorbing key ingredients? The more moisture your skin holds, the more optimized it is to absorb the benefits of your skincare.
The Ordinary introduces its first-ever essence with a formulation that hydrates and primes for enhanced skincare penetration. Launching on the 25th of February, the new Multi-Active Delivery Essence amplifies the skin’s hydration and function by a conditioning method in preparation for the application of other products. In fact, it has been clinically proven to double the penetration of our Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum.
This conditioning essence also instantly hydrates and softens, giving smoother-feeling skin.
The lightweight, water-like formulation strengthens the skin barrier after one application, and keeps skin hydrated all day, for a more luminous appearance.
Heighten Hydration, Enhance Ingredients
You wouldn’t typically go through your hair care routine without conditioning your hair, so why is this conditioning step overlooked in skincare? Hair conditioner tackles concerns such as frizz, dryness, and damage whilst maintaining manageable and moisturized hair with 49% of conditioner users seeking out those moisturizing and conditioning benefits specifically.
If we consider conditioning in terms of nature, think about watering a houseplant. If you add water to the surface of very dry soil, the soil will absorb the water, not the roots. It’s important to make sure the top layers of soil are hydrated so that the water can get to the roots and allow the water to be delivered to where it needs to be most effective. Multi-Active Delivery Essence acts as that water to instantly nydrate and condition the skin which allows for enhanced penetration. This leaves previously dehydrated or dry skin nourished, soft, and firm – feeling hydrated and luminous all day.
Meet the Technologies of Multi-Active Delivery Essence
Multi-Active Delivery Essence contains a specific combination of four active technologies, which effectively hydrate to prime the skin for enhanced penetration of skincare ingredients to assist in unlocking your skin’s true potential.
The Ordinary’s clinical research team worked with external labs to investigate how Multi-Active Delivery Essence improved delivery of the niacinamide within Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% and were able to show applying Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% after Multi-Active Delivery Essence doubles the penetration (or delivery) of niacinamide2 after 1 hour.
While Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, a formulation with a smaller molecular size, is the baseline formulation for investigating penetration enhancement, Multi-Active Delivery Essence can help hydrate skin to prime for the penetration of other active ingredients. The Ordinary recommends exploring products that highlight smaller molecules as key ingredients such as the below:
Glycerin helps to improve skin hydration while reinforcing the skin barrier for moisture retention.
Propanediol is a humectant that helps to improve skin hydration and can help to support the penetration of certain ingredients into the skin.
Sodium Caproyl Prolinate can help improve the delivery of other technologies within a formula such as amino acids and niacinamide.
Glycogen supplies the skin with energy to promote a radiant appearance and can help boost the skin’s natural Hyaluronic Acid levels for more hydrated skin.
Pairings Backed by Science
The skin is composed of three layers; the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The top layer, the epidermis, is our first line of defense against external aggressors and acts as a semi-permeable barrier to prevent harmful molecules from entering the skin while allowing the penetration of smaller, often desirable molecules. Molecular size is directly correlated to penetration.
However, there are many other products that can be used with Multi-Active Delivery Essence, that contain technologies that include larger molecules but can offer their additional product benefits alongside its hydrating properties such as Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 and Multi-Peptide + HA.
This product is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and isn’t recommended for use alongside Retinoids or Direct Acids.
How do you use it?
With this essence, The Ordinary enters a new sub-category while expanding the ‘Prep’ stage of ‘Prep. Treat, Seal’! This ‘Prep’ step works to bring the skin into a desired state for ingredient penetration.
